Do you need a Mercedes or BMW to sell Real Estate?

The other day I saw a post in one of the FB groups where a person asked “Do I need a nice car to be successful in real estate”. To see all the responses was pretty entertaining. Everything from:

“Yes it does”,

“It is the final accessory”,

“Depends on market”,

“No it does not”,

“It is a reflection of you”,

“Your clients want someone with a nice car”.

WOW, I was blown away with the diversity of it. Let me first say that sure, it depends on market and image in some respect. I mean if the average sales price you deal with is $200-$300k and you roll in to a $700k house, you better smell the part. So if you are going after luxury business you need to look luxury. If you get an occasional higher priced property, don’t go spending thousands on a ride just yet.

 

One of the brokerages I worked at for 8 years taught me some very good lessons in life and real estate. They were a Father and Son team. The father handled the real estate and the son handled the brokerage business. The father was a machine, he was always in the top 20 for the state, sold hundreds of houses per year. The son ran the brokerage and the new construction division. Between the two of them they did phenomenal. They both drove banged up Toyota Camry’s with 200,000 miles on them…. So get the notion right out of your head that you need a fancy car to be successful.

 

I have sold over 100,000 million in real estate in my career and I drive a 13 year old Ford Expedition with 210,000 miles on it. So there is another example of winning at the game without the fancy vehicle. I have never lost a listing because of my vehicle…. Matter of fact, I find that many people appreciate the conservative approach where I live. Matter of fact, I sold a surgeon friends house recently. He bought it 6 years ago with me, we recently resold it and he bought new construction. The total package is over 2 million. He drives a Toyota 4 runner with 250,000 miles on it. He can drive any car he wants to… He and I joke about who is going to break down first and get a new whip.

 

I do know of a few occasions where agents had something said to them about their vehicle sure… But if anyone is that pompous to say something along those line, I do not want to work with them to begin with so that would not bother me.

 

Do not fall in to the thinking of your vehicle will sell you. YOU SELL YOU… clients go with you because of YOU and that is it. Be confident, dress successfully, talk knowledgeable and you will be successful.
